Audio Book Cinco Esquinas (Spanish Edition) with FREE PDF EDITION!

I read this primarily for its Lima setting and for its insights into Peruvian society which I found interesting. Vargas Llosa is a courageous writer and person full of social and political conscience and commitment for which he is to be admired and read. But here the material does not rise to the heights of The Dream of the Celt or Feast of the Goat. Its linear trudging narrative holds the story down and the characters remain shallow and clichéd. Vargas Llosa says he wanted to examine good and bad aspects of journalism, he has certainly emphasized the public appetite for sexual scandal even in a society torn apart by corruption and terrorism. The sexual elements in the novel seem to underline this serving to titillate and reprove at the same time. None of the characters are likeable with perhaps the exception of Peinata the ruined actor with the grudge against the journalist who ruined him. Everyone seems touched by the general decadence or corruption, part of Vargas Llosa's plan perhaps. The weakest part for me was the journalistic resolution which I found entirely unconvincing, it reminded me of Hollywood, and made me think Peru must have worst Secret Intelligence Service ever. This is not Vargas Llosa's great Peruvian novel but hopefully that will come.
