A compelling and comprehensive look at the life and art of Francis Bacon, one of the iconic painters of the twentieth century—from the Pulitzer Prize-winning authors of de Kooning: An American Master. This intimate study of the singularly private, darkly funny, eruptive man and his extraordinary art “is bejeweled with sensuous detail … the iconoclastic charm of the artist keeps the pages turning” (The Washington Post). “A definitive life of Francis Bacon ... Stevens and Swan are vivid scene setters ... Francis Bacon does justice to the contradictions of both the man and the art.” The Boston GlobeFrancis Bacon created an indelible image of mankind in modern times, and played an outsized role in both twentieth century art and lifefrom his public emergence with his legendary Triptych 1944 (its images "so unrelievedly awful" that people fled the gallery), to his death in Madrid in 1992.Bacon was a witty free spirit and unabashed homosexual at a time when many others remained closeted, and his exploits were as unforgettable as his images. He moved among the worlds of London's Soho and East End, the literary salons of London and Paris, and the homosexual life of Tangier. Through hundreds of interviews, and extensive new research, the authors probe Bacon's childhood in Ireland (he earned his father's lasting disdain because his asthma prevented him from hunting); his increasingly open homosexuality; his early design careernever before explored in detail; the formation of his vision; his early failure as an artist; his uneasy relationship with American abstract art; and his improbable late emergence onto the international stage as one of the great visionaries of the twentieth century. In all, Francis Bacon: Revelations gives us a more complete and nuanced--and more international--portrait than ever before of this singularly private, darkly funny, eruptive man and his equally eruptive, extraordinary art. Bacon was not just an influential artist, he helped remake the twentieth-century figure.

Francis Bacon’s remarkable paintings may be beautiful but no one ever called them pretty. They evoke intense emotions in the viewer but seldom pleasant ones. His one of a kind portraits remind us that behind the paint and costuming we wear to make us attractive, we’re still meat machines, easily torn apart, flayed and disassembled. I don’t know if I could live with a Bacon reproduction on my living room wall but I thrill to see his works in a museum or gallery.“Raw” is the word for Bacon’s art. Unsettling. But it’s beautiful nonetheless. Like good art is supposed to, it opens you to new depths of perception (the colors, textures, composition, the un-ordinary detailing of a body’s parts) and feeling.Has there ever been another artist like Bacon in the West, a serious artist I mean, not some hack illustrator drawing monsters for a pulp sci fi magazine? “Magic realist” Ivan Albright, to an extent. The flat surfaced, de-estheticized nudes of Bacon’s sometime friend and sometime rival Lucian Freud. The monstruous watercolors of William Blake, inspired by his reading of Revelations, the scariest book in the Bible. Rembrandt Anatomy Lesson. Goya’s Caprichos, Los Desastres de la Guerra, his portrait of the oafish Carlos V of Spain and his family. Maybe Caravaggio?***In 2005, Stevens and Swan won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics’ Circle award for their Willem de Kooning: An American Master. It’s a big, thick, rich book, and generously, copiously illustrated with high quality prints of Bacon’s work, even to foldouts for his triptychs. They have adopted an ingenuous way to write about their present subject, the talented and controversial Irish painter Francis Bacon (1909-1992): once far enough along in the history of his life to discuss his mature works, they end chapters, not every chapter but several, with a short analysis of a single work. This is a brilliant art history book, which will make even the skeptic appreciate Bacon’s work more. Blake comes across as well as a kinky but decent, and often extraordinarily generous, man.
