I bought this coming with only basic knowledge and while helpful, it has flaws. I feel the 5 star reviews are not well deserved because while this was compiled by people with a lot of experience, their ability to communicate to a layman and their skill in writing a book is lacking. This does not read like a beginner's book. I expected an overview of the basics to get started but it's more like a condensed encyclopedia on woodturning. They went far too in depth on subjects like dust control to be useful for an actual beginner. In fact, they made dust sound so dangerous I almost stopped and sold my tools.They call it a book for beginners but they wrote it like a reference for an experienced turner. It's almost overwhelming and I get frustrated with all the unnecessary filler content when I just need a how-to on a particular step. It's like they were so excited to share their knowledge they word-vomited everything that came to mind on to these pages. Even the pictures are poorly chosen. The example of finishes shows almost no discernible detail and even the big cover photo looks like clay rather than wood.So, it's useful but I wouldn't recommend it to a true beginner. They just didn't have good sense for what a beginner actually needs - and doesn't need - to... begin. These authors are just not particularly talented teachers in this medium. I would tell a beginner to look at other books as their first.
